gren|a|dier «GREHN uh DIHR», noun.
1. (originally) a soldier who threw grenades. Soldiers of long service and acknowledged bravery were selected as grenadiers.
2. (later) a member of a specially chosen unit of foot soldiers, especially a member of a company composed of the tallest and best soldiers in a regiment.
3. (now) a member of a special regiment or other group in certain armies, especially a member of a special regiment of guards in the British army. They are attached to the royal household.
4. any one of a group of soft-finned, deep-sea fishes.
5. a South African weaverbird with vivid red and black feathers.
